

Common names: Summer Flounder, Doormat, Flounder
General: The Summer flounder is a member of the flat fish
family Bothidae.
This is a “left-handed” flounder; it’s eyes and mouth
being on the left side as the fish lies on the bottom. Although the species
spends most of the time buried in the sand or mud, it is a fast swimmer that is
able to successfully pursue small fish, squid, crabs and shrimp. Summer flounder
have been reported to reach weights of 25-30lbs, however fish from 7-15lbs
(called “doormats”) are more common with those between 2-6lbs the norm.
Distributed from Maine to South Carolina, summer flounder are one of the
mainstays of saltwater sport fishing during the summer months. They are also an
important commercial species because they are an excellent table fish.
Water Temperature: Range 55° F to 80° F. Best for angling 63° F to 77° F

the end of July. In the Sound, fluke arrive in late April
and stay in the area until mid-October.

Method: MIDDLEBANK II Drifts, maximizing a baits' coverage over a given piece of bottom, for fluke. A baited rig is lowered to the bottom and allowed to "bounce" along. This gives the bait a life like action and triggers strikes.
